William Squires is easily, the greatest track and field coach inBoston State College history. The words "legendary" and "worldclass" often precede his name when talking about the greatestdistance running coaches in U.S. history. The renowned coach spent18 years tutoring the runners at Boston State College and owned anoverall record of 274-84, good for a .765 winning percentage.Squires also led the Warriors to 49 team championships and earnedNCAA Coach of the Year honors on three occasions. Prior to coachingsome of the greatest distance runners on the national level,Squires trained 16 collegiate All-Americans and three NCAAchampions. He founded and coached the Greater Boston Track Club,considered one of the greatest track clubs in the world. His teamswon 17 national championships and he has coached some of thegreatest U.S. marathon runners in history, including Bill Rodgers,Bob Hodge, Randy Thomas, Greg Meyer, Dick Beardsley and AlbertoSalazar. He also coached the only three American runners to win theBoston Marathon since 1980 in Rodgers, Meyer and Salazar. Histeachings are known throughout the running world and he has beenseen as a commentator for NBC, ABC and the BBC, while also penningsix books on running. In 2002, Squires was the second annual winnerof The Bill Bowerman Coaching Award, presented by the NationalDistance Running Hall of Fame & Nike.
