Perhaps one of the greatest pitchers in Boston State history,Mark Matanes '71 was a four-year letter winner with theWarriors.  The go-to ace in the Boston State bullpen,Matanes ended his college career as one of the most accomplishedpitchers in program history, as he held program records in careerwins, total innings pitched, strikeouts, and appearances.

During his four seasons he amassed a career record of 16–4with a 2.85 earned run average.  His standout play on the hillearned him All-New England and Most Valuable Player honors in 1969.Matanes helped the program to back-to-back New England SmallCollege Athletic Conference (NESCAC) playoff appearances his juniorand senior seasons, and he served as a co-captain in his finalseason with the Warriors.

Following his graduation from Boston State, Matanes went on toearn his master’s degree from Boston University.  Healso earned his Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study from BostonCollege while teaching adaptive physical education to special needschildren. He turned his education into a calling, working andcoordinating Massachusetts Special Olympics programs for the BostonPublic Schools.  While doing all of that, Matanes also foundtime for the game he loved, serving as a coach for the South BostonBabe Ruth Baseball League.

After dedicating his life to the city of Boston as a teacher andcoach, Matanes was recalled to active duty in 2005 with the UnitedState Navy.  After returning home, Matanes received one of thebiggest honors of his life as he was enshrined in the New EnglandBabe Ruth Baseball Hall of Fame in2008.          

Currently, Matanes serves as the State Commissioner of theEastern Massachusetts Babe Ruth Baseball. He and his wife Rosemaryhave two children, Sara and Mark.
