UMass Boston's football program began in the mid 1980s as a clubprogram, before reaching NCAA varsity status in 1988. Pat Sperdutosaw action on the club team, before playing two impressive seasonsat the varsity level in 1988 and 1989 at linebacker and fullbackfor the Beacons. He led the team with 75 tackles, including 43solos and six sacks during the 1988 season and gained 33 yards on10 carries as well. Sperduto enjoyed an outstanding seniorcampaign, leading the team with 96 tackles, including 54 solos andfive sacks to go with a pair of fumble recoveries and was named tothe New England Football Conference First Team for his efforts. Hegraduated from UMass Boston in 1989 and still ranks third on theschool's all-time sack list with 11 in just two seasons. Hecontinued his playing career following his time at UMB with a stintin the Canadian Football League with the British Colombia Lions,before joining the Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena Football Leaguefrom 1991-93, where he helped them win a pair of ArenaBowls. Healso began his coaching career during this time as an assistantwith Murray State University, prior to taking over footballoperations for the American Sports Foundation of Macelatta inTolentino, Italy in 1992. He began to focus solely on his coachingcareer as an assistant for the Storm in 1994 and 1995, helping themto another ArenaBowl crown in 1995. He spent 1996 as the defensivecoordinator and director of player personnel for the ConnecticutCoyotes (AFL) prior to joining the Nashville Kats' staff in 1997.He was the defensive coordinator and player personnel directorduring the 1997 season and was elevated to assistant headcoach/defensive coordinator for the 1998 campaign. He guided theKats to a 27-15 mark over the next three seasons and led them to apair of ArenaBowl appearances. Following the sale of the franchise,Sperduto joined the Tennessee Titans of the National FootballLeague in 2001 as a member of the coaching/scouting staff until2008. During this time, the Kats returned to Nashville and Sperdutotook over the coaching reins again for the next three seasons,before moving on to his current position as a scout for the KansasCity Chiefs.
