Gus Sullivan's name is synonymous with Boston State Collegeathletics. He served as the school's Director of Athletics for 31years from 1948-78 and began the program with just the sport ofbasketball. Upon his retirement in 1978, BSC boasted a program of20 athletic teams for men and women. Sullivan also founded thenation's second oldest college hockey invitational, when heestablished the Codfish Bowl in 1965, a tournament that routinelyfeatured the region's top hockey teams. Under Sullivan's guidance,Boston State was a member of the NCAA, ECAC, NAIA, NESCAC, NECAC,MASCAC and NRA and was a major power when the NCAA was made up oftwo basic divisions - small college and major college. During histenure, Sullivan held many distinguished titles, serving asDistrict Chairman of the NAIA, Chairman of the ECAC HockeyTournament, President of the NESCAC, Chairman of the NESCAC SportsCommittee and became the first commissioner of the MASCAC in 1974.Sullivan was also active within the City of Boston as Chairman ofthe Athletic Advisory Council and Associate Commissioner of Parksand Recreation. Sullivan helped put Boston State athletics on themap with such notable coaching appointments as UMass BostonInaugural Hall of Famer Ed Barry, former Boston Celtic JimLoscutoff, fellow UMB Hall of Famer William Squires, pistol coachDr. Lebaron Colt and two-time NCAA wrestling champion Jim Nance. Healso made time for coaching as the mentor for Boston State'sbaseball and basketball squads from 1954-60.
