The Boston State Men's Lacrosse team's defense was one of thenation's best in the early 1970s and Frank Kelly was a big reasonfor it. He is the only defender in school history to be namedAll-New England twice to go along with a pair of Colonial LeagueAll-Star selections. The greatest defensemen to ever play for theWarriors helped them to a 28-9 (.757) record in his three-yearcareer, including a 23-3 mark over his final two campaigns. He wasnamed the team's Most Valuable Player during the 1971 season whenit was 12-1 and routinely was assigned to opponent's top scorersthroughout his career. He was so adept at maneuvering through thedefensive zone, that Hall of Fame coach Gordie Webb dubbed thetransitional move the "Kelly Clear". The shutdown defender startedall 37 games of his career and helped the Warriors to the ColonialLeague crown as a senior and their first appearance in the UnitedStates Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association National ChampionshipTournament. The 1972 graduate led the defense that established aschool-record for fewest goals allowed per game in 1972 at four. His legend includes such milestones as the first defenseman inschool history to net a goal and the first to record an assist.
