Head coach of Boston State College football from 1975 to 1978, Mac Singleton takes his place in the UMass Boston Athletics Hall of Fame posthumously.

Believed to be the first African American to coach a college football team in New England since 1904, he led the Warriors to a New England Football Conference championship in his first season as the head coach. The ’75 team posted a record of 7-3. He was a dynamic and passionate leader, who lifted the Warriors to new heights during his time with the green and gold. A dedicated member of the BSC Athletics Department, Singleton also served as assistant football coach, director of intramurals, assistant wrestling coach, and head coach of women’s basketball. As a student-athlete Singleton was a three sport athlete, and played for legendary coach Ross O’Hanley.

Following his departure from BSC, Singleton served as the assistant football and baseball coach at Harvard University from 1978 to 1993. While working with the Crimson, he stepped into the world of professional football, serving as the assistant tight ends/wide receivers coach for the 1989 Buffalo Bills. In the mid-90’s he worked with the Arena Professional Football League and the NFL’s European League. In 2004, Singleton made the switch from the gridiron to the baseball diamond as he was named the hitting coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers minor league team.

He passed away on February 20, 2017, at his Windham, N.H. home after suffering a heart attack. He was 74.
