Darrelle Boyd becomes the sixth track and field star elected tothe UMass Boston Hall of Fame and is one of the greatest middledistance runners in school history, competing in four seasons onthe indoor and outdoor track teams as well as the cross countrysquad. She was a part of all four of the Beacons' NCAA track andfield championships, helping them capture the 1985 indoor, 1986indoor, 1986 outdoor and 1987 indoor crowns.

The Mattapan native was a part of UMass Boston's runner-upshowings in the 1988 NCAA indoor and 1987 and 1988 outdoor meetsand helped the squad to a fifth place finish in the 1985 outdoorchampionships as well. The 1989 UMass Boston graduate finished inthe top six in the 800 meters seven times at the NCAAchampionships, including second place finishes in the 1985 and 1988outdoor meets and placed in the top seven in the 1500 meters fourtimes to go along with a first place showing as part of the 1988NCAA championship 4X400 indoor relay team to give her All-Americanstatus 12 times, the third-highest total of any UMB athlete inschool history. She burst onto the scene as a freshman becoming theonly athlete on the squad to capture All-American status in twoindividual events during the indoor season and matched the featagain as a junior during both the indoor and outdoor campaigns.Boyd took seven individual first place finishes in distancesranging from 800 meters to the mile during her career, includingtop finishes in the 1500 at the 1985 ECAC outdoor championships andthe 800 at the 1986 ECAC indoor championships. She attained All-NewEngland status in seven events, while earning All-ECAC honors in 11events and holds four individual school records including theschool standard for the indoor 1000 yards (2:36.18), 1000 meters(3:02.6), mile (5:02.1) and outdoor 1500 meters (4:33.64) and was apart of the UMass Boston's school-record breaking relay teams inthe 4X800 (9:07.3) and distance medley (12:33.02) outdoorraces.

Following her tremendous collegiate career, she went on to asuccessful coaching career with the Boston International Track Clubfor 12 years, where she coached three national champions. Boyd alsocoached for eight years on the Northeastern University staff andwas a part of the Mayor's Youth Olympics for 12 years. Shegraduated Suma cum Laude from Curry College with a masters ofeducation in 1996 and was the class valedictorian.
