One of the most outstanding hockey players in Boston Statehistory, Joseph P. McLean, Jr. '69 already had a place inthe UMass Boston Athletics Hall of Fame as a member of the 1967-68Boston State men’s ice hockey team.  A three lettermanwith the Warriors, McLean led Boston State to three consecutiveCodfish Bowl Tournament championships (1967, 1968, and 1969), andwas also named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player in1967.

After a standout season in 1968, McLean earned the team’sMost Improved Player Award.  Dominant on both sides of the redline, McLean was considered by his teammates and coaches as one ofthe most top defensive forwards in the program’s history.

After graduating from Boston State, McLean continued to add tohis academic resume as he earned a master’s degree in historyfrom Suffolk University and in law enforcement from Anna MariaCollege. 

McLean would then go on to have an illustrious career in theBoston Police Department.  During his 38 years with thedepartment, McLean would earn multiple accommodations for serviceand duty, including the Medal of Honor, which is the highest honorthat can be presented to a Boston police officer.

His work in the community is just as impressive.  He andhis wife Janice started the Lance Corporal Joseph P. McLean, IIIFoundation in honor of their late son who died on active duty whileserving with the United States Marine Corps.  Since itsinception in 1994, the McLean Foundation has distributed more than$500,000 to families in need and countless charities in the Bostonarea including, the Children’s Hospital, The Leukemia &Lymphoma Society, and the United States Marine Corps Toys forTots.
