Sherman Hart put UMass Boston track and field on the map. Nocoach in the school's history has made as much of an impact or doneit as quickly as he did. In just his second season as the women'strack and field mentor, the Beacons placed 52nd at the 1984 NCAAoutdoor championships. Little did the collegiate track scene know,UMass Boston track and field was ready to take over. The followingyear, Hart's athletes captured the first of three straight women'sNCAA indoor championships and in 1985-86 his women's team becamethe first to ever win both the indoor and outdoor titles in thesame academic season. Hart led the Beacons to a total of fournational crowns and three runner-up finishes, including two at theoutdoor competition. For his efforts, he was named NCAA DivisionIII Coach of the Year in 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988, while capturingseven ECAC championships between the indoor and outdoor seasons.Under his guidance, 37 NCAA individual or relay championships werewon by UMass Boston runners and his athletes gained All-Americanstatus 48 times. Hart saw his UMB women's indoor and outdoor teamsfinish second in the NCAA championships in 1988 and went on tocoach at Northeastern University where he didn't miss a beat,leading the Huskies' women to 20 America East titles and the men toseven. He also guided the women to six New England crowns and themen to a New England championship as well, while being namedConference Coach of the Year 13 times between the women's indoorand outdoor seasons and five times on the men's side. Hart has beenhonored as the District I Division I Coach of the Year four timesand has seen Northeastern athletes named All-American nine times,All-East over 50 times as well as coaching them to countlessAmerica East and New England titles. Besides his impressiveaccomplishments on the collegiate level, Hart founded the BostonInternational Track Club while he was a Northeastern student in1974 and has been the director ever since.
