Five-foot, seven-inch guard Steve Karll controlled the tip vs.undefeated Salem State College (24-0) with just 12 seconds left.His jump shot came off the rim, but Rod Forbes was there for theput back as the 1966-67 Boston State Men's Basketball team defeatedthe Vikings to advance to the NAIA National Tournament. The winmarked the first time that any Warriors' team from the school hadadvanced to a national tournament. Head Coach Jim Loscutoff wassupposed to leave for South America on March 6 to promotebasketball for the United States, conducting clinics and workingwith teams such as the National team from Uruguay, but thethree-month tour would have to wait as Boston State had a date inKansas City with Guilford College in the first round of the NAIAchampionship tournament. The Warriors owned a 46-31 advantage with17 minutes left in the game, before Guilford went on a blistering32-7 run to dash their hopes. Boston State finished with an 18-10mark and never lost more than two games in a row all season. Seniorcaptain forward George MacKay was named an NAIA All-American, whilesophomore forward Rod Forbes averaged 17.1 points and 6.9 rebounds.Sophomore center Joe Casey netted 13.8 points per game and used hissix-foot, four-inch frame to grab an amazing 17.9 rebounds perouting.
