James Kent was a two-sport star at Boston State College, makinghis mark as a football and lacrosse player. The offensive guard wasa four-time New England Football Conference All-Star selection andan All-America Honorable Mention during his four-year career from1971-74. He captained the 1974 squad to the NEFC championship,while being named the Warriors' Most Valuable Player as a senior.His athletic prowess wasn't limited to the gridiron, however, as heenjoyed a stellar senior campaign on the lacrosse field, earningAll-Conference honors as well as team MVP accolades, while guidingBoston State as its captain. Following his playing career, the 1975BSC graduate returned to the Warriors' football program patrollingthe sidelines as an assistant coach for eight years, includingBoston State's 1978 New England Football Conference championshiprun. Kent made the transition to UMass Boston as the Beacons HeadFootball Coach from 1984-93, overseeing UMass Boston's ascensionfrom a club team to a varsity program during his tenure. Hementored the 1987 club team to an undefeated season and was honoredas Coach of the Year in 1987 and 1989. His 1990 squad establisheditself as a significant force in the NEFC, setting 36 conferencerecords and four NCAA standards, while finishing the season with a5-4 mark.
