Babson Slips By Softball In Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BABSON Park, Mass.—Sophomore pitcher Ali Reilly earned a win and a save for the host Babson College Beavers, as Reilly and Leslie Moore combined to hold UMass Boston softball to just seven hits and no runs in a non-conference doubleheader.

THE BASICS

Game One: Babson College 2, UMass Boston 0

Game Two: Babson College 3, UMass Boston 0

(UMass Boston 8-6)

(Babson College 10-6)

HOW IT HAPPENED

In the first-ever doubleheader between the two sides, UMass Boston couldn't get their bats going, in a pair of tightly contested pitcher's duels.

Freshman infielder Roxanne Vento (Arlington, Mass.) led the Beacons with a pair of hits, as they suffered their fourth and fifth shutout losses of the season.

GAME ONE

Reilly outdueled Annie Thomas (Lunenburg, Mass.) in the opener, as Reilly allowed just three hits and one walk, in a complete-game shutout. The sophomore also struck out four for the host Beavers.

Ashley Tango led Babson with two hits and a run scored, while Leslie Moore and Rachel Bullard each added an RBI.

For the Beacons, Thomas allowed five hits and two earned runs, in her seventh complete game in seven career starts. Thomas also struck out three.

Offensively, Lauren Mitsiaris (Taunton, Mass.), Taylor Marcotte (Agawam, Mass.) and Vento each recorded a single in the loss.

Babson took the lead in the bottom of the first, as Josephine Mares registered a one-out double and came in to score on Moore's RBI single with two down.

The Beacons had baserunners in each of the next four innings, but Moore did not allow a runner past second base.

The Beavers added an insurance run in the fifth, when Tango led off with a double and scored on Bullard's RBI safety squeeze bunt.

GAME TWO

Babson struck for three runs in the first three innings and UMass Boston squandered a bases-loaded, no out chance in the top of the seventh, in a 3-0 loss.

Madison Dinaso and Bullard each went 2-for-2 with an RBI in the nightcap, while Moore finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and the win.

Moore allowed just two hits in five scoreless innings, while striking out two and walking two. On the Beacons' side, Vic Zechello (Foxborough, Mass.) allowed three earned runs and eight hits in five innings of work. Sophomore pitcher Morgan Bishop (Ramsey, N.J.) struck out two in a perfect sixth inning.

Kaitlyn Morse (Arlington, Mass.), Alyssa Tulley (Lowell, Mass.), Taylor Pawlina (Woonsocket, R.I.) and Vento all finished with a single in game two.

Babson took a 2-0 lead in the second, as they used three singles and a walk to scratch across two runs.

Moore added an RBI single in the third to help her own cause, as the two teams would go scoreless the rest of the way.

The Beacons had chances throughout the contest, as they stranded a runner in scoring position in the second and sixth and Morse was thrown out at the plate in the third.

UMass Boston looked prime to tie the game up in the seventh, as Tulley led off with a single, Thomas walked and Alexa St. Angelo (Cranston, R.I.) reached on an error. With the bases loaded and no outs, Mitsiaris hit a fly out to center and the umpire ruled that Tulley left third early, resulting in a double play. With two down and two runners on, Pawlina loaded up the bases with a single to left. Reilly shut the door on the Beacons though, as she recorded a strike out to end the game.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Babson improved to 12-8 all-time against the Beacons, as they earned their third-straight win.
  • Vento has hit safely in five-straight games and 11 of 14 overall. She's now hitting .378 on the season.
  • The Beacons recorded three double plays on the afternoon. They have now recorded five on the season.
  • UMass Boston's pitching staff allowed multiple runs in back-to-back games for the first time all season. To put that in perspective, UMass Boston allowed multiple runs in 29 of 30 games last season.

WHO'S NEXT

UMass Boston will open Little East Conference play on Saturday, as they will travel to take on Eastern Connecticut State University for a doubleheader starting at noon. The Beacons will be looking to earn their first-ever win against the preseason LEC favorites (0-40).
