CLERMONT, Fla.—Lauren Mitsiaris (Taunton, Mass.) and Morgan Bishop (Ramsey, N.J.) both drove in a pair of runs in game one, to help UMass Boston earn a split on Day Two of the NTC Games.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Mitsiaris and Bishop combined to go 4-for-6 with four RBI and two runs scored and freshman Annie Thomas (Lunenburg, Mass.) allowed just one run over seven innings, to help the Beacons knock off the Red Hawks 4-1 in game one.

The Beacons couldn't carry the momentum over into their nightcap. Western New England University scored six runs in the first and five more in the second, to cruise to an 11-0 five-inning win.

GAME ONE

Mitsiaris, Bishop and Alexa St. Angelo (Cranston, R.I.) each finished with two hits, to help the Beacons spoil Ripon's season-opener.

As a team, the Beacons racked up a season-high 11 hits, as they jumped all over Ripon pitcher Lexi Reetz.

The Beacons opened the scoring in the top of the second, as Mitsiaris led off with a double to center field and came into score on Bishop's sacrifice fly. 

UMass Boston made it a 5-0 game in the third inning. With two runners on and one out, Mitsiaris blasted a double off the center field to score two runs. Alyssa Tulley (Lowell, Mass.) followed with an RBI double of her own and Bishop closed out the inning with an RBI single.

Ripon attempted a comeback in the bottom half of the inning, but the Red Hawks were held to just one run. Kaylee Arendt's RBI triple cut the deficit to 5-1, but Taylor Pawlina (Woonsocket, R.I.) kept the rally from gaining any further momentum, when the freshman center fielder tracked down a ball in right-center for the third out. 

Thomas closed out Ripon from there, as the freshman allowed just eight hits and two walks, while striking out eight.

GAME TWO

The second contest was a polar opposite of the first; as the Beacons couldn't find any timely hitting and found themselves in an early hole, in which they couldn't dig themselves out of. 

The Golden Bears struck for six runs on six hits in the first inning and five more on three hits in the second, to provide all the scoring their pitching staff would need.

On the Beacons side, sophomore Kelsey Whiting (Sharon, Mass.) was roughed up for four runs earned runs in just two-thirds of an inning, in her Beacons' debut. Freshman Vic Zechello (Westborough, Mass.) came on in relief and threw the next 3.2 innings, as she allowed 10 hits, but just one earned run.

Bishop came on to close out the game, as the sophomore threw a perfect fifth inning in her collegiate debut from the circle.

The Beacons were held to just five hits at the plate, as they suffered their second shutout loss in as many days.

BY THE NUMBERS

• With the win, UMass Boston improved to 2-0 all-time against Ripon.
• The Beacons have allowed two earned runs or fewer in three of their first four contests.
• Thomas has allowed just one earned run and has struck out 20 through her first 18 collegiate innings.
• Freshmen Jackie Flynn (Braintree, Mass.) and Tulley both made their first collegiate starts on Sunday, while Whiting made her debut as a Beacon.
