NEW LONDON, N.H. – After what turned out to be a longer day then expected, volleyball still got the job done as they knocked-off Colby-Sawyer College and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy by the finals of 3-0 Saturday afternoon at the Colby-Sawyer Tri-Match.

HOW IT HAPPENED

In their first match of the day, the Beacons cruised to a 25-13 win in the first set over the host Chargers.  The two teams then went the distance in the second, with the Beacons prevailing 27-25.  In the third set, it was all UMB as they earned a 25-19 victory over their New Hampshire rivals.

Against Coast Guard, the Beacons continued to roll, first taking a 25-18 win in the opening frame.  In the second set, UMass Boston collected a 25-20 win, before closing out the day with a 25-17 win.

Against Colby-Sawyer, Julia Murphy (Canton, Mass.) crushed a match-high 12 kills and hit .455 in the non-conference win.  Eileen Shi (San Francisco, Calif.) finished with nine kills, while Melanie Fyda (Park Ridge, Ill.) totaled eight kills and hit .357 in the win.  Rachel Maslach (Berlin Center, Ohio), who is seeing more time as a hitter this season posted an impressive .444 hitting percentage, as the Ohio native finished with five kills on nine attempts.

Christina Elliott (Camas, Wash.) collected a match-high 22 assists, while fellow setter Pepper Baker (Tallahassee, Fla.) finished with 18 assists.  Shi was the lone player to record double-figures in digs, as the sophomore collected 11 to also record the only double-double in the contest.  Sarah Doyle (Glendale, Calif.) finished as the team's top blocker with one solo stop and two block assists.

In the second match of the day, it was all Murphy once again as the senior All-American hit .636 in the won.  Shi had another strong showing throwing down a team-best 11 kills.  Baker and Elliott combined for 28 assists respectively, while Elizabeth Glavan (Edina, Minn.) returned to form with her match-high 15 digs.

BY THE NUMBERS

• All-time the Beacons are now 3-1 against Colby-Sawyer and 2-0 against Coast Guard
• Their match with Colby-Sawyer was the first since 2014, and the Beacons second 3-0 win over the Chargers. 
• Saturday's match, marked the first meeting between UMB and Coast Guard since 2011 when they defeated the Bears 3-0 in the Clark Gymnasium
• Murphy is now at 368 career total blocks which is now just seven blocks away from tying the all-time record set by current assistant coach Shannon Thompson
