KEENE, N.H. 4/19/11 - The Keene State College softball team swept a Little East Conference doubleheader against UMass-Boston at Owl Athletic Conference on Tuesday. Junior Emily Albin (Bethel, Conn.) scattered five hits in a 5-0 shutout win in the first game and sophomore Nicole Dupuis (Fitchburg, Mass.) knocked in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Owls a 4-3 victory in the second game.
Keene State, winners of seven of its last eight games, improves to 23-7 and 6-2 in the LEC. UMass-Boston (18-10, 2-4 LEC) saw its three game winning streak come to an end.
Both Albin and UMB junior pitcher Katie Corey (Weymouth, Mass.) wiggled out of jams in the first five innings of the opener. KSC left eight runs on base and the Beacons stranded five through five innings.
The Owls finally got to Corey in the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior Sara Stocklinski (Newton, N.J.) brought in the first run when she walked with the bases loaded. Junior Laura Chandler (Wakefield, Mass.) followed with a two-run single to make it 3-0. KSC got its last two run on errors. "I was expecting an outside pitch and when it came I was able to get the hit," said Chandler.
KSC finished the game with 13 hits. Sophomore Kayla Joyce (Bridgewater, Mass.) went 3-for-for while the top of the order, Haley Chandler (Wakefield, Mass.), Stocklinski, and Laura Chandler each had two hits.
Sophomore Taryn Asta (Marshfield, Mass.) and junior Jaci Goodwin (Melrose, Mass.) each had two of the Beacons five hits.
Albin fanned nine and walked a pair, improving her record to 9-3. "Both teams had a lot of opportunities to score," said Albin. "I was able to bear down and get some big out and we were able to comeback for the win."
Corey (8-6) took the loss for UMB. She struck out four and walked five batters.
In the nightcap, Keene State took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a double down the left field line by Stocklinski. UMB tied the game in the top of the fourth on a RBI single from Asta.
KSC took a 3-1 lead in the fifth on run-scoring singles by Dupuis and junior Courtney Savoie (Stratham, N.H.).
The Beacons tied the game with two outs in the seventh. Freshman Erika Vecchiet (Pequannock, N.J.) drove in one run with the single. The second UMB run scored on a balk.
With one out in the bottom of the inning, Laura Chandler doubled down the left field line. Dupuis brought her home with an opposite field single that fell just inside the right field line. "Yesterday at practiced I worked at going to the opposite field and it came in handy today," said Dupuis, who finished the game with two hits.
Haley and Laura Chandler each chipped in with two hits for the Owls.
Sophomore Sue Killilea (Abington, Mass.) had three of the Beacons seven hits in the game.
Savoie pitched the first four inning for KSC, giving up one run on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Stocklinski took over in the fifth, allowing two runs on three hits. Junior Samantha Pratt (Bristol, Conn.), who got the final out in the seventh, picked up her first win (1-0) of the season.
