Providence, RI -- The Rhode Island College softball team swept a Little East Conference doubleheader by edging visiting University of Massachusetts Boston by scores of 4-3 in both games. The Anchorwomen improve to 24-5 overall and 8-2 in LEC play, while the Beacons fall to 18-15 and 4-6.
Junior pitcher Amanda Berard (Swansea, MA) picked up the win (9-3) in game one and a save (5) in the nightcap. Sophomore pitcher Kyla Puccini (North Dighton, MA) earned the win (6-2) in game two.
Junior shortstop Donielle Mattoon (Coventry, RI) and freshman designated player Emily Johnson (West Kingston, RI) each went 3-for-6 with an RBI in the twinbill.
UMass Boston freshman catcher Sue Killilea (Abington, MA) went 4-for-8 with two runs scored, two runs batted in, a double and a triple. Junior designated player Maria Nasta (Andover, MA) went 3-for-6 with two runs scored, three RBI and a pair of homers (3).
The first game was a tight affair as Nasta tagged RIC senior starter Jenna Deveines (Lowville, NY) for a two-run shot over the left field fence with two away in the first.
UMB junior starter Emily Wolf (Salem, MA) cruised through the first two innings, retiring the first six batters she faced. Rhode Island College turned to Berard to start the third and the righty was on top of her game, shutting down the Beacons over the next four frames.
RIC did all of its damage in the fifth as junior center fielder Amanda Perry (New Bedford, MA), freshman second baseman Missy Jandreau (Plainville, CT) and Mattoon each hit RBI singles. Senior right fielder Michelle Perrin (Saugus, MA) chipped in with an RBI ground out.
An infield single by Killilea and a walk by freshman third baseman Marisa McKinnon (Revere, MA) put runners on first and second with one away in the sixth for the visitors. Freshman shortstop Taryn Asta (Marshfield, MA) singled to center to plate Killilea with her school-record setting 35th run scored of the season pull the Beacons within a run. RIC caught a break as sophomore left fielder Jaci Goodwin (Melrose, MA) tried to bring in the equalizer with a surprise bunt, but she made contact with the ball while running up the line and was called out. Berard got a ground out to end the threat.
Berard allowed just one run on four hits, while striking out eight, in five innings of work. Wolf gave up four runs on eight hits in a complete game effort.
In the nightcap, RIC wasted no time by taking a 2-0 lead in the first. Junior catcher Kayla Jandreau (Plainville, CT) and Perrin both singled to lead off. Both stole a base and when the ball ended up in the RIC dugout after an attempt to catch Jandreau, she was awarded home plate. Junior first baseman Chelsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA) brought in Perrin with a sacrifice fly.
The hosts went up, 4-0, in the third as RBI doubles by Panarelli and Johnson knocked in runs. Puccini quickly got two outs in the sixth before things began to unravel. Nasta clouted her second bomb of the day and the next two hitters singled, forcing the Anchorwomen to turn to Berard. The righty struck out Goodwin to end the threat.
With two out and two aboard in the seventh, Killilea nearly tied the game as her blast to right center just fell short. She ended up with a two-run triple. After a hit batsman, Berard came up with a big strikeout to seal the win.
UMass Boston sophomore pitcher Kara Willis (Burrillville, RI) took the loss (7-8), surrendering four runs on nine hits in six innings. Puccini allowed just one run on eight hits in five and two-thirds inning of work.
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue the Little East Conference schedule when it hosts Western Connecticut on Tuesday, April 27, while the Beacons host Keene State College in a league twinbill on April 27 at 3:30 p.m.
