Game Two Box Score
BOSTON, MA - Junior southpaw Emily Wolf (Salem, NH) hurled a one-hitter to record her first career shutout and freshman catcher Sue Killilea (Abington, MA) knocked in four runs with a double and a triple to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston softball team to a doubleheader sweep over visiting Suffolk University, 11-0, 9-1, today at the Clark Athletic Center field on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons won both games in five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule and win their school-record seventh straight game, while also breaking the school record for season victories as they improve to 13-10 on the season. The pair of wins also give Head Coach Natalia Ardagna (Revere, MA) 31 for her career to become the all-time victories leader at UMass Boston. The Rams fall to 7-25 overall.
UMass Boston exploded for eight runs in the third inning of game one, including four which were unearned. The Beacons entered the frame with a 1-0 lead and looked to immediately build on the margin when freshman second baseman Kasey O'Connell (Quincy, MA) hit a deep triple to left field and came around to score on a double to left by freshman catcher Sue Killilea (Abington, MA). Junior designated player Maria Nasta (Andover, MA) reached first after being hit by a pitch and freshman third baseman Marisa McKinnon (Revere, MA) followed with a run-scoring single up the middle to bring home Killilea and put Nasta on third. Freshman shortstop Taryn Asta (Marshfield, MA) reached on an infield single to shortstop to score Nasta and give UMass Boston a 4-0 lead. McKinnon later scored on a throwing error as did Asta on a different throwing error for a 6-0 UMB lead. The Beacons tacked on three more runs in the inning due to an error, an RBI single from O'Connell and an RBI groundout by Killilea for a 9-0 UMass Boston advantage.
Meanwhile, junior southpaw Emily Wolf (Salem, NH) was working on a no-hitter through three and two-thirds innings until sophomore first baseman Karina Bolster (Carlisle, PA) stroked a single to left field for Suffolk's only hit of the game. The Beacons added two more runs in the fourth when McKinnon and Asta registered back-to-back singles to lead off the inning and both later scored on a two-run single to left field off the bat of sophomore first baseman Lisa Polsonetti (Revere, MA) to give the home team an 11-0 lead.
UMass Boston scored the first run of the contest in the bottom of the first when senior right fielder Amanda Cianciulli (Billerica, MA) worked a leadoff walk, moved to second on an O'Connell single and scored on a single up the middle by Killilea.
Wolf allowed just the one single and walked two batters, while striking out six to earn her first career shutout and improve to 7-5 on the season for the Beacons, while sophomore starting pitcher Elizabeth Galvin (Medway, MA) was tagged for nine runs (five earned) on eight hits and a walk in the loss to go with a pair of strikeouts in three innings of work for the Rams.
UMass Boston scored five times in the bottom of the second of the nightcap to give it all the runs it would need for the contest. Asta, freshman Janery Gomez (Boston, MA) and junior Christina Polsonetti (Revere, MA) all drew walks to load the bases with no outs to set up a run-scoring ground out by Lisa Polsonetti to put the hosts on the board. Cianciulli followed with an RBI single and O'Connell matched her with a run-scoring base hit of her own to give UMB a 3-0 lead. Killilea then tripled to plate another run and later scored on an error for a 5-0 margin.
Suffolk scored its lone run of the afternoon when junior designated player Jacky Swift (Cranston, RI) blasted a 2-1 offering over the left center field fence to lead off the fourth and cut the deficit to 5-1. The Beacons answered in the bottom of the frame with a run of their own when Nasta reached on a two-out single and later scored on a single to center field by Asta to make it 6-1. UMass Boston put the game away with three more runs in the fifth when Christina Polsonetti led off with a single and went to third on consecutive sacrifice bunts, before scoring on a single to center by O'Connell. Killilea singled up the middle to put O'Connell into scoring position where Nasta knocked her in with a single to left field to give the Beacons an 8-1 lead. McKinnon launched a 1-1 pitch off the base of the fence for a run-scoring double to make it 9-1.
Sophomore starting pitcher Kara Willis (Burrillville, RI) improved to 6-5 with the win for UMass Boston, yielding one run on five hits and a pair of walks, while striking out five. The win gave her 16 to move into third on the school's career list. Sophomore starter Carissa Roche (Swampscott, MA) suffered the defeat for the Rams, going two innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits and three walks.
Killilea was 4-7 on the day for the Beacons, while O'Connell was 6-7 with a triple, three RBI and three runs scored.
