KILLILEA LEADS SOFTBALL IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP AT UMASS DARTMOUTH, 5-3, 9-1

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - The University of Massachusetts Boston softball team scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning and came from behind to defeat University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 5-3, in the first game of their Little East Conference doubleheader at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday. The Beacons won the second game, 9-1 in five inning.

Sophomore first baseman Lisa Polsonetti (Revere, MA) hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to tie the opener at 3-3. One out later, junior designated hitter Maria Nasta (Andover, MA) doubled home the go-ahead runs.

The Corsairs took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore pitcher Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, MA) and senior third baseman Emily Surprenant (Attleboro, MA) singled home runs, and freshman first baseman Samantha Howarth (Seekonk, MA) walked with the bases loaded to force home a third run.

Freshman second baseman Kasey O'Connell (Quincy, MA) singled home a run for the Beacons in the third.

Junior southpaw Emily Wolf (Salem, NH) went all the way for UMass Boston and earned the win, improving to 6-5. Eldridge took the loss and fell to 2-3.

Freshman catcher Sue Killilea (Abington, MA) doubled with the bases loaded to drive in three runs and key a five-run rally for UMass Boston in the nightcap. Freshman right fielder Taylor Ham (Hingham, MA) drove in UMass Dartmouth's only run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Freshman third baseman Marisa McKinnon (Revere, MA) had three hits and drove in two runs for the Beacons. Sophomore Kara Willis earned the win and improved to 5-5, allowing just one run on five hits, while striking out five. Howarth took the loss for the Corsirs and fell to 1-5.

UMass Dartmouth is now 5-11 and 0-4 in the Little East Conference, while UMass Boston has won five straight and is now 11-10 and 2-2. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Becker Tuesday. The Beacons will visit Suffolk for a 3:00 p.m. twinbill on Tuesday, April 13.
