SALEM, MA - The Salem State College softball team allowed just one run en-route to a double header sweep over visiting University of Massachusetts Boston today in Salem, MA.
Pitcher Katelynn Fanning (East Boston, MA) stifled the Beacons' bats, recorded the game winning RBI, and scored the insurance run at Alumni field to lead the Vikings 2-0 victory in game one of the twinbill. Jess Baird (Worcester, MA) hit a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Salem State a come from behind 2-1 victory and a doubleheader sweep in game two. The Vikings win their seventh straight and improve to 10-1-1, while UMass Boston falls to 5-6.
Fanning pitched a complete-game seven inning shutout with seven strikeouts and only two walks in game one for Salem State.
The Vikings two runs came in the second inning. Outfielder Jess Baird (Worcester, MA) led off the inning with a triple. Fanning drove her home with a single to put the first Salem State run on the board. Sarah Brown (North Attleboro, MA) drove Fanning in with an RBI double to give Salem State a 2-0 lead.
UMass Boston threatened in the second inning. Freshman third baseman Marisa McKinnon (Revere, MA), who went 2-for-3, doubled to lead off the inning. Sophomore left fielder Jaci Goodwin (Melrose, MA) singled to put runners on second and third, but consecutive strikeouts ended the inning.
Fanning then shut down the Beacons, allowing only two singles after the second inning.
Sophomore starting pitcher Kara Willis (Burrillville, RI) suffered the loss for UMass Boston, allowing two runs and five hits, while striking out three in six innings pitched.
Sarah Bergeron (Methuen, MA) started for Salem State in game two and allowed one run on four hits in three innings. Katelynn Fanning relieved and pitched a shutout over the next four innings, allowing five hits to pick up the win.
UMass Boston took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Junior center fielder Christina Polsonetti (Revere, MA) singled to lead off the inning, stole second and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior second baseman Maria Nasta (Andover, MA).
Emily Wolf (Salem, NH) made the lead stand up until the sixth when the Vikings pushed across two runs. Wolf, who pitched well for the Beacons in the loss, allowed two runs on seven hits and fanned six in six innings pitched.
Amanda Scola (Leominster,MA) and Lauren Garchinsky (Saugus, MA) each collected two hits for Salem State, which plays Brandeis in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 27th. UMass Boston will be in action again when it hosts Massachusetts Maritime Academy for a double header on Saturday, March 27 at 1:00 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center.
