Beacons' Second-Half Rally Falls Short in Season-Opening Loss to Husson

Newton, Mass. (Feb. 28, 2026) — The UMass Boston women's lacrosse (0-1) team opened the 2026 season Friday afternoon at the Charles River Campus of UMass Amherst, showcasing resilience with a dominant second-half performance against Husson University (2-1).

After facing an early deficit, the Beacons regrouped at halftime and delivered a statement over the final 30 minutes, outscoring Husson 7-1 and controlling the pace on both ends of the field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Eagles built an early advantage in the first half, but the momentum shifted decisively after the break.

Jamie McAleavey (Quincy, Mass.) ignited the offense in the third quarter, jumpstarting a four-goal run that trimmed the margin heading into the final period. Angelina Mazzone (Beverly, Mass.) and Ava Duffy (Boston, Mass.) added key finishes during the stretch, with McAleavey and Mazzone each converting on free-position opportunities.

Defensively, Elizabeth Crowley (Medfield, Mass.) anchored a unit that limited Husson to a single goal over the final two quarters. Crowley and the Beacons tightened their ride, forced difficult possessions, and created transition chances that fueled the comeback effort.

UMass Boston continued to press in the fourth quarter, blanking Husson while adding three more goals. Samantha DeMarco (Bayville, N.J.) buried a free-position attempt midway through the period to bring the Beacons within striking distance, as the Beacons generated multiple quality opportunities down the stretch.

The second-half surge underscored the group's composure, depth, and growth potential to open the 2026 campaign.
