UMass Boston Announces Addition of Alana Johnson as Assistant Athletic Trainer

Boston, MA – September 8, 2025 – The University of Massachusetts Boston Department of Athletics and Recreation is proud to announce the hiring of Alana Johnson as an Assistant Athletic Trainer.

"We are thrilled to welcome Alana to our team and are confident she will be a valuable asset to our student-athletes and coaches. Her addition reflects the department's ongoing commitment to investing in the health and well-being of our student-athletes and the UMass Boston community as a whole," said Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Performance & Operations, Ed Perkins.

Johnson comes to UMass Boston with a wide range of clinical experiences at the collegiate and high school levels. Most recently, she served with Merrimack College, where she provided spring sport coverage, evaluated and treated in-season athletes, managed electronic medical records, and designed individualized rehabilitation plans for student-athletes.

Prior to Merrimack, Johnson worked with Boston College as part of the men's soccer and women's skiing programs. She managed post-surgical cases through return-to-play, created sport-specific rehabilitation and practice plans, and gained advanced experience in blood-flow restriction training and innovative technologies such as underwater and AlterG treadmills.

She also gained valuable experience at Tufts University, covering men's basketball and track and field. There, she developed rehabilitation programs for acute, chronic, and post-surgical cases, strengthened athlete assessment protocols, and collaborated closely with physicians, campus health professionals, and coaches.

Johnson began her clinical training at Central Catholic High School Athletics, where she provided acute care, implemented rehabilitation programs, and worked directly with parents and guardians to support athlete health and well-being.

A former track and field student-athlete at Merrimack College, Johnson earned her Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science and her Master of Science in Athletic Training from Merrimack.
