BOSTON, Mass. - February 7, 2024, marks the 38th annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). Powered by the Women's Sports Foundation, NGWSD recognizes women's sports and inspires girls and women to play and be active, to realize their full potential. As a part of its annual celebration of NGWSD, UMass Boston Athletics, in partnership with Strong Girls United Foundation, will be hosting a day of sport participation and fandom at the Clark Athletic Center on Saturday, January 27, 2024.
The NGSWD celebration will feature a sports clinic conducted by coaches and athletes from the women's soccer, women's basketball, softball, and volleyball teams at UMass Boston. Children will have the opportunity to meet and learn from these young women who have worked hard at their respective sports to reach the NCAA level.
Beginning at 11:00 am, the event will open with a welcome from Dr. Jacqui Schuman, Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics at UMass Boston. Then, participants will take part in a rotation of sports skills and drills led by the UMass Boston women's sports teams. Rotations will conclude at 12:05 and will be followed by a free lunch of pizza, that will be served to attendees. During lunch, attendees will also have the opportunity to craft signs and posters for the women's basketball team, which takes on nationally-ranked Rhode Island College at 1:00 pm, and, the Women's Ice Hockey team, which will be hosting the University of Southern Maine for a 3:00 pm puck drop.
The day of sport will conclude with an open skate with the Beacons starting at 5:00 pm. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own ice skates for the open skate portion of the festivities.
Those interested in attending should fill out the RSVP form by Thursday, January 25 to reserve their spot. Any questions about the event can be directed to Stephanie Dollar at stephanie.dollar@umb.edu.
