John Pagliarulo Receives Chancellor’s Staff Achievement Award

Boston, MA (May 13, 2025) — The University of Massachusetts Boston proudly announces that John Pagliarulo, Associate Director of Athletics for Recreation & Finance, has been selected as a 2025 recipient of the Chancellor's Staff Achievement Award. Pagliarulo was honored during a campus ceremony on Wednesday, April 30. 

This prestigious award is presented annually to two university staff members who exemplify exceptional performance, innovation, initiative, service, and excellence—with a strong commitment to creating an anti-racist and health-promoting environment. 

John Pagliarulo is recognized across the university as a dynamic and forward-thinking leader. Known for his team-first mentality, John continually seeks innovative ways to enhance the mission and impact of the Division of Athletics and Recreation. 

"I'm deeply honored and humbled to receive this leadership award. I'm especially grateful to my supervisor, Jacqui Schuman, for the unique opportunity and continued support. Working in a student service environment as dynamic and meaningful as UMass Boston is a true privilege. I also feel incredibly fortunate to collaborate with such a dedicated and inspiring team," said Pagliarulo.

His commitment to student well-being, operational excellence, and inclusive leadership has elevated every facet of our work in Athletics and Recreation. This recognition is not only well-deserved—it's a testament to the impact he makes every day on our campus community." Vice Chancellor of Athletics and Recreation, Jacqueline Schuman Ed.D. 

Among his many accomplishments, John has: 

  • Redesigned the department's budget management process, streamlining operations and improving efficiency. 

  • Prioritized equity by aligning Title IX initiatives with student-athlete support structures. 

  • Advanced wellness on campus through his leadership as co-chair of the Beacon Wellness Commission's employee committee, leading the team that developed 43 actionable recommendations to enhance campus wellness. 

  • Led the operations for the successful reintroduction of Waterfront Recreation at UMass Boston, revitalizing campus engagement with waterfront activities. 

The Chancellor's Staff Achievement Award is a reflection of the University's appreciation for those who go above and beyond in service to its mission. John Pagliarulo's work continues to shape a stronger, healthier, and more inclusive UMass Boston.
