Women’s Basketball Hosts LEC Third-Seeded Huskies on Wednesday

BOSTON, MA (February 4, 2025) – The UMass Boston women's basketball team (8-12, 5-6 Little East Conference) is set to play host to the LEC third-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies (11-9, 7-4 LEC) on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. from the Clark Gymnasium in a LEC showdown for postseason placement.

The Beacons have split their previous 10 games with the Huskies, with the most recent victory coming in January of 2023, when they rallied to a 69-58 win in Gorham, ME.

The Beacons have won three of their last five, with wins coming against the Western Connecticut State Wolves (60-44), Eastern Connecticut State Warriors (69-51) and Plymouth State Panthers (65-58). Their most significant win of the season came against Fitchburg State in early January, where the Beacons routed the Falcons 95-54. Their most recent matchup against the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen went down to the wire, with UMass Boston falling just short in the final minute through a valiant effort.

As a unit this season, UMass Boston is scoring 58.7 points per game and averages 37.6 rebounds, 11.8 assists, 10.9 steals, and 2.9 blocks per game. Sophomore forward Sabanna Berrios (Providence, R.I.) has made a name for herself this season as a primary scoring and glass-cleaning option for the Beacs. In her past five games, she has recorded consecutive double-doubles with points and rebounds (19.8 PPG, 13.2 RPG) and has recorded at least 14+ points and 11+ rebounds in eight of her previous nine games. Berrios leads all UMass Boston scorers with 13.4 PPG, followed by sophomore rookie Hialeah Turner-Foster (Mashpee, Mass.) with 9.1 PPG. Junior guard Tatiannah Fevry (Dracut, Mass.) adds 8.6 PPG, and is one of the top perimeter defenders in the conference with a 2.5 steals per game average, good for second in the conference. Also sneaking their way into the top defensive category is sophomore Samora Merchant (Brookfield, Conn.) with 19 blocks in as many games for the fifth leading spot in blocks per game at the conference level. Sophomore Vanessa Bucha (Aschnuet, Mass.) remains the sharpshooter for the Beacons, with a team-high 23 made triples this season. Junior captain Sibayla Jensen (Portland, Ore.) leads the team in total assists as the primary point guard with 57 in 20 games.

The Huskies are averaging 57.4 PPG, and contribute 36.1 rebounds, 11.9 assists, 8.1 steals, and 2.1 blocks per game. Offensively they are led by first-year guard Lucy Wiles with 11.9 PPG, and Liz Cote with 9.8 PPG. Emma Stred is the lead rebounder with 6.2 boards per game.
