Women’s Basketball Returns to LEC Postseason Tournament Against LEC No.3 Southern Maine

BOSTON, MA (February 24, 2025) – Following the Beacons' 83-54 season-finale win over the Vermont State University Castleton Spartans, the UMass Boston Beacons (10-15, 7-9 Little East Conference) qualified for LEC Postseason play with the sixth seed in the conference, and will play the third-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies (16-9, 12-4 LEC) from Gorham, Maine, on Tuesday (Feb. 26) at 6:00 p.m. in the first round of the 2024-25 LEC Postseason Tournament, their first appearance in three years.

With this appearance, the Beacons make their 34th LEC Tournament appearance in program history, their last championship run coming in 2018 when they defeated the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs 65-56 on the road.

The Beacons successfully navigated through a difficult schedule in 2024-25, and accrued a 7-9 record against conference opponents, while defeating their final two opponents in back-to-back games from the Clark Athletic Center. While on the road, the Beacons have tallied significant wins against the Saint Elizabeth University Eagles (84-55), Fitchburg State Falcons (95-54), and the Eastern Connecticut State Warriors (69-51). In the first matchup against the Huskies this season, the Beacons contributed a valiant effort, outscoring the Huskies 44-41 in the second half, but fell just short after the final buzzer (71-67). In the matchup, the Beacons had three double-digit scorers, Hialeah Turner-Foster (Mashpee, Mass.) with 18 points, Sabanna Berrios (Providence, R.I.) with 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Tatiannah Fevry (Dracut, Mass.) with 12 points and four steals. The most recent victory over the Huskies came in 2023 when the Beacons won by 11 points on the road.

This season, the Beacons are led offensively by Berrios with 316 points through 23 games (13.7 PPG). In 10 games this season, Berrios has recorded double-doubles with points and rebounds. She scored a season-high 26 points against the ECSU Warriors and pulled down a season-high 15 rebounds twice against the Western Connecticut State Wolves and the Keene State Owls. Fevry is just behind Berrios as the number two offensive option as the junior guard continues to develop her game. She scored 201 points in 25 games (8.0 PPG) and is one of the LEC's premier perimeter defenders, ranking fourth among LEC steals per game leaders with 55 in 25 games played (2.2 SPG). Turner-Foster has flourished in her role off the bench in her rookie season with the Beacons. She has led the team's offensive production in three games this season, against the Huskies (67-71), the Wolves (68-57), and Lasell University (50-64). This season, she is averaging 8.1 PPG, with an 18-point season high against the Huskies. Sophomore Vanessa Bucha (Aschnuet, Mass.) and first-year Ashleigh Lagor (Millbury, Mass.) are the leading sharpshooters for the Beacons this season, with Bucha hitting 25 triples, and Lagor connecting on 14. Sophomore Samora Merchant (Brookfield, Conn.) joins Berrios as the team's leading rebounders. Merchant has raked in 147 rebounds (59 offensive, 94 defensive, 6.1 RPG) in 2024-25, with a season-high 15 vs Saint Elizabeth University. She has pulled in 10+ rebounds in four games. Merchant has locked down the painted area this season, with two or more blocks in nine games, including a season-high four swats against three opponents. Junior Sibayla Jensen (Portland, Ore.) is the Beacons' leading playmaker with 70 total assists this season (2.8 APG). Jensen dished out a season-high seven assists against two opponents this season as a true point that knows how to find her teammates in their spots.

Lucy Wiles leads the Huskies' offensive production with 12.2 PPG, followed by Liz Cote with 11.0 PPG and Dakota Shipley with 9.5 PPG. The Wolves average 60.6 PPG with 37.3 rebounds, 12.0 assists, 8.2 steals and 2.4 blocks per game.
