Women’s Basketball to Host WestConn Wolves on Wednesday

BOSTON, MA (January 28,l 2025) – The UMass Boston women's basketball team (7-11, 4-5 Little East Conference) returns to the Clark Gymnasium on Wednesday, January 29, at 5:00 p.m., as they continue the LEC regular season against the Western Connecticut State Wolves (5-13, 3-6 LEC). The Beacons have split their last seven games (4-3) and are most recently coming off a 69-51 win over the Eastern Connecticut State Warriors in Danbury, CT.

The most significant wins for UMass Boston this season have come against the Keene State Owls (50-47), the Fitchburg State Falcons (95-54), and Saint Elizabeth University (84-55).

Wednesday's game will be recognized as the Beacons' DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) game, which will aim to highlight and recognize the importance of inclusion in sports.

The Beacons enter Wednesday's matchup against the Wolves, scoring an average of 59.3 points per game, with 37.2 rebounds, 11.7 assists, 10.8 steals, and 2.8 blocks per game. Offensively, they are spearheaded by sophomore forward Sabanna Berrios (Providence, R.I.) with 13 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. Berrios has tallied six double-doubles in her last seven games with at least 13+ points and 11+ rebounds. On Wednesday, she added a new career-high 24 points against VTSU Castleton, followed by another career-high 26 and 13 rebounds against the Warriors on Saturday. Berrios was recognized for her performances last week on the conference level, earning LEC Player of the Week. Junior guard Tatiannah Fevry (Dracut, Mass.) has been the primary on-ball defender for UMass Boston, averaging an LEC fourth-best 2.3 steals per game (41 in 18 games) as one of the conference's premiere perimeter defenders. In 15 games played, sophomore rookie Hialeah Turner-Foster (Mashpee, Mass.) is second on the team in scoring with 9.4 PPG, providing an offensive spark for the Beacons off the bench. Sophomore Vanessa Bucha (Aschnuet, Mass.) remains the hot hand for the Beacons, draining a team-high 21 makes from beyond the arch this season.

The Wolves are recently coming off their first win in nine games against the Plymouth State Panthers (66-57). Their most significant win came against York College (89-34) in November of 2024. As a unit, the Wolves are averaging 58.7 points, with 39.1 rebounds, 11.7 assists, 8.6 steals, and 2.4 blocks per game. Offensively, they are led by first-year Nia Rencher with 15.0 PPG and 7.7 rebounds per game with 1.4 steals and 0.9 blocks per game.
