SPRINGFIELD, MA (January 25, 2025) – The Beacons' men's track and field team continued their progression at the Massasoit Classic at Springfield College on Saturday, where UMass Boston registered 35 points as a team and continued to solidify themselves amid conference rankings.
Highlights:
Derrick Touba (Yonkers, N.Y.) scored eight points and finished second in the 60m dash with a time of 7.19 seconds.
UMass Boston filled out the final three scorers in the men's 200m dash, led by Touba with three points in sixth place with 23.60s, followed by sophomore
Justin Riley (Weymouth, Mass.) in seventh place with 23.70s, and rounded out by junior
Melvin Wiltshire (Boston, Mass.) in eighth place with a 23.82s finish.
Riley registered a PR in the 200m dash and followed up his seventh-place finish in the 200m with a fifth-place finish in the men's 400m dash with another new PR at 53.48s. Joining Riley in the 400m dash was Wiltshire, who scored two points in 54.68s with a seventh-place finish, and
Elaijah Monterio (New Bedford, Mass.), who took eighth place in 54.71s for the final point in the event.
Junior
Robert Cannon (Quincy, Mass.) took three points in the men's 5,000m run with a new PR of 17:32.05s for sixth place.
Junior
Olutemi Alofe picked up the throwing unit's three points in the men's shotput with sixth place, finishing with a new PR of 12.16m (39 feet, 10.75 inches) to lead the Beacons from the thrower's circle.
The men's 4x400m relay team consisting of Monterio, Wiltshire, first-year
Alex Martins (Malden, Mass.), and Riley finished third in 3:43.24s for the final eight points in UMass Boston's tally from Springfield College.
As a team, the Beacons scored 15 points in the sprinting events, nine through long and mid-distance events, three points in the throws, and eight points in the relays.
What's Next:
- The Beacons will travel to Northampton, MA, next Saturday, February 1, for the Smith College Invitational.
