BOSTON, MA (September 24, 2024) – The UMass Boston women's soccer team is back in action on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m against the Engineers of Worcester Polytechnical Institute (WPI). The Beacs return to the James Cotter Field in Boston, Massachusetts, coming off a 2-1 week while opening conference play.
Previously
- The Beacons and the Engineers have only matched up against each other on three separate occasions, with the Beacons going 1-1-1 over a 24-year span. The first meeting dates back to 2010 when the two teams stalemated at 1-1 after 90 minutes. The most recent meeting saw the Engineers take one back from UMass Boston, as the Beacons lost 1-0 back in 2022.
This Season
- The Beacons have exceeded early expectations this season, maintaining a 5-1-2 record through the first eight games and holding a perfect 1-0 Little East Conference record. The Beacs recorded big wins against Smith College in the home opener, against Westfield State, Curry College, and LEC opponents Plymouth State, where the Beacons routed the Panthers in an 8-3 onslaught. First-year midfielder Sofia Schallmo (Norwood, Mass.) is coming out of an electrifying week as she brought home the first LEC Weekly Award of 2024 for the Beacons following a magical nine-points, five assists, two against Curry and three against Plymouth State, and two goals, one against Curry and another against Plymouth. Junior midfielder Andrea Rivera (San Juan, P.R) enters the game fresh off her first career hat-trick against Plymouth State. Rivera leads all Beacons' goal scorers with five goals and currently stands tied for third for most goals in the LEC. Junior goalkeeper Julia Cote (Baldwinville, Mass.) has won four games in five played, accruing 30 saves against 53 shots for a .811 save percentage, good for third in the LEC.
- The Engineers have kicked off their year with a 4-2-1 record, with a 1-0 record in the New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). Their last matchup saw WPI put down NEWMAC opponents Wellesley College 4-1. The Engineers also recorded wins against Worcester State (5-3), Roger Williams (4-1), and Union College (1-0). The Engineers have a trio of primary goal scorers, led by sophomore forward Maeve Steckley, who tallied a hat-trick and an assist against Worcester State to lead the team with seven points. Following Steckley, first-year forward Abigail Johnson has tallied three goals, one against three opponents. The final tool for the Engineers' arsenal is senior midfielder Olivia Toolin, who has recorded points in four different meetings, as she tallied two goals and two assists for six points.
