MYRTLE BEACH, SC ( March 16, 2024) – The UMass Boston men's track and field team fed off the fresh air of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina as they opened their 2024 season from the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational, with many strong performances to begin the outdoor season on the right foot.
The Beacons' sophomore
Isaiah Stressman tripled, instead of his typical indoor event the triple jump, in the 400m dash, the 400m hurdles, and the 4x400m relay as Stressman gave three full laps around the 400m track at 100% on three separate occasions from the meeting. In the flat 400m dash, Stressman finished 20
th out of 57 with a time of 53.21, good for a new personal record in the event. His second lap around the track in the 400m hurdles saw him record a 59.66s finish, good for another new personal record on the day. First years
Hugo Dos Santos, and
Elmani Debarros also laced up for UMass Boston in the 400m dash, as Dos Santos followed Stressman with a 55.94, followed by Debarros who finished in 57.40. Dos Santos and Debarros also represented UMass in the 200m dash, with Dos Santos finishing first for the Beacs with a 24.05 finish, followed by Debarros who finished in 25.42s.
Sophomores
Derrick Touba and Omosigho Asuen as well as first year
Prabhdeep Bassan represented the Beacons in the 100m dash, with Touba finishing first for the Beacons with a time of 11.48s, followed by Debarros with an 11.77s finish. Bassan opened his season with a 12.25s finish.
First-year
Robert Cannon took to the track for the 800m dash, as his finish of 2:14.00 was enough to take 11
th out of 28 other runners. Cannon also repped the men's 5000m run for the Beacons, as he recorded a 16:48.48s finish as the sole Beacon to run the event.
From the field events, the Beacons' flight crew of Asuen and Bassan took to the long jump runway for UMass, as Asuen recorded the Beacons' best from the pits with a 5.57m best on the day, followed by Bassan who tallied a 4.82m best.
In the men's javelin throw, first-year
Brady Poirier represented the Beacons, as he recorded a best throw of 37.43m on the day to open his season with a new personal best, and a team-leading mark in the event.
The Beacons head back home to New England for the remainder of their 2024 outdoor campaign with their next meeting slated for Saturday, March 30
