Jimmy Cannon Breaks 34-Year Record in 5,000 Meter Run at Suffolk Relays


BOSTON, Mass. – Graduate student Jimmy Cannon broke the 34-year record for UMass Boston Men's Indoor Track in the 5,000 Meter Run, set by Peter Gregory in 15:22.60 back in 1988. On Saturday afternoon at the Suffolk Relays, Cannon ran a 15:20.18 in the Men's 5,000 Meter Run to win the event and break Gregory's record by just over two seconds.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
 
Cannon's performance was one of two that recorded points for the team at the Suffolk Relays on Saturday with his record-breaking performance. Falling just outside of point placement was freshman Rob Cannon making his indoor track debut, finishing 10th in the 5,000 Meter Run with a time of 16:31:53. Both Cannon brothers finished first and second in the 5,000 Meter Section 2.

Freshman Melvin Wiltshire took Section 8 of the Men's 200 Meter Run with a time of 24.22 which placed him 32nd overall in the event.  

The other two points for UMass Boston came during the Men's 4x200 Relay in which they finished 11th overall with a time of 1:43.22.

The Beacons continue their Indoor Track & Field season in Boston, competing in the UMass Boston Indoor Open at New Balance next Saturday.
