BOSTON, Mass.—With the cancellation of all spring sports on Friday, March 13, we didn't get the chance to document the stories of our spring athletes as part of our ongoing Beacon Spotlight Series.

Over the next few months, we will talk to all of our spring seniors, to find out what they are doing away from school, talk about their careers and give themselves a chance to tell their stories.

The first senior we caught up with is baseball pitcher Joey Rogers. The senior southpaw talked about his time as a Beacon, how he worked to put together a strong senior year and why he decided to go to Officer Candidate School.

Baseball Coach Brendan Eygabroat's Thoughts On Joey

Joey has been an amazing Beacon. He is the most disciplined player I have ever coached. He was a huge recruit for us to land, and he was an instant impact guy for us coming of a season where he was Massachusetts D2 State Player of The Year. 

He has been so dependable during his time at UMB. He is a tireless worker, and most of all a fantastic teammate.  Joey always had the respect of everyone in our dugout due to his work ethic and his character. Joey is the type of player you dream about. He would work his tail off on the diamond, weight room, and of course in the classroom. He has a streak of 4.0's which was very impressive.

Joey will be greatly missed, but his time at UMB was well spent. He is a player who can look back at his career with no regrets since he emptied the tank every day. He will be a tremendous asset to our military and I look forward to seeing his future accomplishments

TOP MOMENT AS A BEACON

Joey describes his top moment as a Beacon (8:40 in the interview) as winning the 2019 UMass Boston Super Regional. In the first-ever year of the Super Regional Format, UMass Boston defeated New England College 6-2 in Game 3 of the Best-of-3 series at Monan Park to earn a spot in the 2019 College World Series.
