GORHAM, Maine (May 6, 2026) – UMass Boston Baseball (20-21, 8-8 Little East Conference) dropped its opening game of the LEC Tournament with a 13-1 loss to Keene State at the Ed Flaherty Field.
How it Happened:
Keene State opened the scoring in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of a base hit to right field to go up 1-0. Defensive miscues by UMass Boston led to two unearned runs in the fourth, as Keene State extended its lead to 3-0. In the bottom of the sixth, the Owls tacked on two more with a two-RBI single, pushing the advantage to 5-0.
The Beacons got on the board in the top of the sixth when Elliot Miles (Portsmouth, N.H.) scored on a throwing error after reaching base via hit by pitch. However, Keene State responded in emphatic fashion in the bottom of the seventh, erupting for eight runs including a grand slam to right field. That inning saw the Owls blow the game open, ultimately closing out the contest with a 13-1 final after seven innings.
By the Numbers:
• UMass Boston was held to one hit—the lone single coming from Brandon Gaer (Rocky Hill, Conn.).
• Elliot Miles (Portsmouth, N.H.) reached base twice and scored the Beacons' only run. He also registered the team's only stolen base.
• Robert Wunsch (South Windsor, Conn.) started on the mound, going 5.1 innings and allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits, with three strikeouts and three walks.
• The 12-run margin of defeat matches the Beacons' largest loss of the season, equaling the 1-13 setback at Western New England on March 13.
