Women's Basketball Races Past Western Connecticut State 92-69

BOSTON, Mass.—UMass Boston women's basketball shot a season-high 50 percent from the field and hit a season-high 11 3-pointers, to earn a 92-69 rout of Western Connecticut State University on Tuesday night at the Clark Athletic Center Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beacons enjoyed their best offensive game of the season, en-route to a season-high 92 points.

Joie Grassi (Plymouth, Mass.) and Tahjai Mazyck (Hamden, Conn.) each finished with a game-high 17 points. Grassi finished 6-11 from the field and pulled down eight rebounds and added four blocks. Mazcyk chipped in seven assists and went 7-11 from the field.

Alecia Quinones (Stoughton, Mass.) tacked on 12 points and four rebounds. Freshmen Kaylee Haynes (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Keriann Farina (Arlington, Mass.) chipped in with 10 and eight points respectively.

Western Connecticut State was led by 13 points apiece from Gabrielle Hurlbert and Samantha Garcia. Genesis Torres finished third on the team with 12 points. 

UMass Boston jumped all over the Warriors from the start, as they exploded for 34 points in the first quarter. UMass Boston went 13-25 from the field (52 percent) in the quarter and also hit three 3-pointers.

After Western went out to a 6-2 lead to begin the game, UMass Boston went on a 13-0 run to take control of the game for good (15-6). The Beacons added a 12-3 run to close the quarter to earn a 34-12 advantage after 10 minutes. 

The Beacons kept the momentum going in the second quarter, as they shot 52.6 percent (10-19) and added four more 3-pointers. For the half, UMass Boston shot 52.3 percent (23-44) and knocked down 7-13 of their 3-point attempts (53.8 percent). 

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Beacons recorded season-highs in points (92), field goal percentage (50 percent), made 3-pointers (11), made field goals (37) and tied their season-high in assists (23).
  • With the win, UMass Boston earned their program-record best sixth-straight win over Western Connecticut State. The Beacons improved to 18-40 all-time against the Colonials.
  • The Beacons had not scored 92 points, since putting up 92 points in a win against Western Connecticut State on February 17, 2018.
  • Twelve of the 13 Beacons who played recorded points and nine players registered at least one assist.
  • Geanna Williams (Cromwell, Conn.) and Sarah St. Surin (Norwalk, Conn.) each recorded seven rebounds off the bench.
  • Grassi is now just 19 points shy of 1,000 for her career (981 career points).
  • The Beacons improved to 4-0 on the season at home. UMass Boston has averaged 83.8 points per game in those four contests.

UMass Boston will take on intra-state rival UMass Dartmouth on Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. in a key Little East Conference contest.
