Volleyball Swept On First Day Of Auggie Invite

AUGSBURG, Minn. – Facing perhaps their two toughest opponents of the young season volleyball was handed a pair of 3-0 losses by 30th ranked University of St. Thomas (MN) and fourth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Friday afternoon on day one of the Augsburg University Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED

In their first match of the tournament, the Beacons managed to hit over .200 in just one of the three sets, before falling to St. Thomas.  The Tommies picked-up a 25-15 win in the first, before earning a 25-18 win in the second and a 25-14 win in the third.

In their best set, which was the second frame, the Beacons hit .258 as they scored 10 kills on 31 attempts.  Emilia Czapiewska (Saint Paul, Minn.) led the Beacons in the match with 11 kills and led the team with a .280 hitting percentage.

Carsen Komminsk (Worthington, Ohio) registered 16 assists in the loss and had the team's only two service aces.  Komminsk, Czapiewska, and Sidnee Berch (Boca Raton, Fla.) were each tied for the team-lead in digs with five each.  Middles Sarah Doyle (Glendale, Calif.) and Marcelle Tiscareno (El Paso, Texas) each posted a block solo.

In the second match, Czapiewska led the offense again with nine kills.  The Beacons played extremely hard in the first two sets, as they were defeated by a combined 10 points (25-19 and 25-21).  The Bluegolds cruised in the final frame as they earned a 25-11 victory. 

Tyla Parker (Mahwah, N.J.) combined for five assists and 11 digs, while Komminsk finished with eight assists and nine digs. 

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Friday's matches marked the first time that UMass Boston faced St. Thomas and Eau-Claire
  • Eau-Claire marked the highest ranked team that UMass Boston has faced during the regular season
  • With her 20 kills, Czapiewska recorded her 500th career kill during her three seasons at UMass Boston

The Beacons will face nationally-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater at 11 am (EST) and Augsburg University at 1:30 pm (EST) on the final day of the Auggie Invite.
