Women's Tennis Rallies For Thrilling 5-4 Win Over Worcester State

BOSTON, Mass.—Facing a 4-3 deficit, UMass Boston freshmen Shelby Parent (Cambridge, Minn.) and Evangelia Vassiliadis (Weymouth, Mass.) each earned singles victories to lead women's tennis past Worcester State University 5-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beacons showed tremendous resolve across the board, to earn a win in their tightest match of the season thus far. 

With the win, UMass Boston tied the program record for the longest winning streak in program history with their sixth-straight victory. 

UMass Boston freshmen Amy Drame (Milwaukee, Wisc.) and Vassiliadis each went 2-0 in the victory. 

Worcester State took their first lead of the day with a win at number two doubles. Charlotte Mullane and Emma Collings combined to defeat Valeria Tueme (Bonney Lake, Wash.) and Parent 8-2. 

UMass Boston evened the match up at first doubles. After a tight start to the match, Katie Gauthier (West Boylston, Mass.) and Drame cruised to an 8-3 win. 

At third doubles, Chloe Gates (Plymouth, Mass.) and Vassiliadis rallied from an early 3-0 deficit, to grab an 8-6 win and a 2-1 overall lead for the Beacons. 

UMass Boston earned their largest lead of the day to begin singles play. Drame cruised past Lauren Taylor 6-2, 6-0 at first singles to make it 3-1. 

Dominique Alves began the comeback for Worcester State with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Gauthier at second singles. 

The visitors tied the match, when Mullane knocked off Tueme 6-2, 6-1 at fifth singles. 

Worcester State took their second and final lead of the day (4-3) at fourth singles. Monika Mularski defeated Meaghan Moriarty (Norton, Mass.) 6-3, 6-0 at fourth singles. 

UMass Boston tied the match for the third time, when Parent defeated Emily Costa 6-0, 6-2 at sixth singles. 

In the final match on the courts, Collings and Vassiliadis went to three sets at third singles. Collings took the first set 7-6 (7-4), to put the Beacons backs against the wall. Vassiliadis held on for a 6-4 win in the second set and then stormed through the third set for a 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-1 win. 

BY THE NUMBERS

  • With the win, UMass Boston tied the 2000-01 teams that won the final three matches of 2000 and the first three matches of the 2001 season for the longest winning streak in program history. 
  • Vassiliadis has now won 12-consecutive matches. The freshman earned her first career three-set singles victory in today's match.
  • The 2019 team is now tied for second-place in program history for most wins in a single season. The 2010 and 2016 teams also won eight matches, while the 2001 team set the program record with 10 victories. 
  • Parent moved to a perfect 8-0 on the season in singles with her win. She is now 4-0 at both fifth and sixth singles. 
  • With the win, UMass Boston is now tied for third in program history for conference wins in a single-season (three). The 2015 and 2016 teams are tied for first, after both teams went 4-4.

UMass Boston will travel to Bridgewater State University on Wednesday at 3 p.m. for a key LEC conference matchup.
