SPRINGFIELD, MA (April 7, 2026) -- The UMass Boston women's tennis team faced Western New England at Springfield, MA last Tuesday. The match was delayed by one hour due to rain and sleet earlier in the day. Despite the delay and strong winds, the Beacs perserveired to deliver a 5-2 non-conference road win.
To begin the day, Maya Rubinstein (Pittsburgh, Penn.) and Zainab Patel (Ahmedabad, India) efficiently secured a 6-2 win over Emma Miller and Elise Catlett at doubles No. 1. Both doubles No. 2, Shreya Saravana Rakshana (Bengaluru, India) Valerie Cuanca (Miami, FL), and doubles No. 3, Kathy Roqueza (Holyoke, MA)/ Karina Khalsa (South Yarmouth, MA) lost 4-6 to their opponents.
In singles play, the women were tenacious and consistent, working toward securing the overall win. Patel defeated Emma Miller, 6-1, 6-2 at singles No. 1 to claim the first point for the women. Sandra Watson (West Palm Beach, FL) secured a 6-3, 6-0 win at singles No. 2 and Rubenstein defeated Lauren Bilodeau, 6-1, 6-1 at singles No. 3. Saravana Rakshana defeated Yasmine Giacalone, 6-1, 6-2 clinching the winning point. Following that, Kathy Roqueza closed out the day for the Beacons battling through a three setter to defeat Gabrielle Tirkot, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 11-9.
