Women's Tennis Improves To 2-0 For First Time Since 2001

WATERVILLE, Maine—All six Beacons went 2-0, to lead UMass Boston women's tennis to their first 2-0 start since 2001, with a 9-0 victory over Thomas College (Maine) on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

UMass Boston swept doubles play and dropped just 11 games across 12 sets in singles play, to earn their first 9-0 sweep of the season.

Senior Valeria Tueme (Bonney Lake, Wash.) had the most dominant day for the Beacons. She did not drop a game at either second doubles or fourth singles in the win over the Terriers.

Evangelia Vassiliadis (Weymouth, Mass.) and Meaghan Moriarty (Norton, Mass.) opened the match with an 8-1 victory at third doubles.

Chloe Gates (Plymouth, Mass.) and Tueme made it 2-0 moments later, as they blanked Taylor Davis and Cassidy Hamm 8-0 at second doubles.

Shelby Parent (Cambridge, Minn.) and Katie Gauthier (West Boylston, Mass.) closed out the sweep of doubles, with an 8-6 win at number one doubles.

Gates capped off her dominant day with a 6-1, 6-0 thrashing of Samantha Mercier at sixth singles.

Tueme clinched the match victory with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Hamm at fourth singles.

Parent pushed the Beacons advantage to 6-0 at fifth singles, when she claimed a 6-0, 6-2 victory.

Moriarty earned the Beacons second 6-0, 6-0 blanking during singles play, as she easily overpowered Davis at third singles.

Gauthier closed out a perfect opening weekend with a 6-3, 6-2 win at number one singles.

In the final match to finish, Vassiliadis improved to 4-0 on the season by earning a 6-3, 6-0 win at second singles.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • UMass Boston is 2-0 for only the third time in program history. The Beacons started 2-0 in 1999 and went 3-0 to start the 2001 season.
  • With the victory, UMass Boston improved to 2-0 all-time against Thomas College. The Beacons defeated the Terriers 6-3 during the spring portion of their 2018-19 schedule.
  • Tueme went 2-0 in a match for the first time since 2017 Opening Day. She is also 2-0 in singles to start the 2019-20 season, after not winning a singles match last year.
  • Gauthier, Vassiliadis and Parent all improved to 4-0 to start the season on Sunday.

WHO'S NEXT

UMass Boston will be off until Saturday, when they travel to take on two-time defending Little East Conference Champion Rhode Island College at 1 p.m.
