Women's Tennis Opens Spring Season With 6-3 Win Over Terriers

BOSTON, Mass.—Despite only playing with five players, UMass Boston women's tennis opened their spring season with a 6-3 victory over visiting Thomas College.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beacons earned their third-consecutive win dating back to the fall by earning wins at all five singles matches they had players competing in. 

Junior Katie Gauthier (West Bolyston, Mass.) and Meaghan Moriarty (Norton, Mass.) both went 2-0 in the match to lead the Beacons. 

The Beacons top doubles pair of Gauthier and Moriarty opened the match with an 8-0 sweep at number one singles. 

Thomas College answered back at number two doubles. Abigail Stevens and Cassidy Hamm defeated Annie Fidelia (Medford, Mass.) and Tuyet Nguyen (Dorchester, Mass.) 8-5 to give the Terriers a 2-1 overall lead. 

With the Terriers leading 3-1, thanks forfeits at third doubles and sixth singles, UMass Boston won each of the five contested singles matches to take home a comeback win. 

Moriarty started the rally with a dominating 6-0, 6-1 win at second singles. 

Miranda Harkess (Boston, Mass.) tied the match at 3-3, when she cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at fourth singles in her first collegiate match. 

Nguyen gave the Beacons their first lead of the match, when she took home a 6-2, 6-2 victory at fifth singles. 

Gauthier clinched the match victory at number one singles. The Beacons junior captain defeated Alexis Nestor 6-0, 6-2. 

In the final match to finish, Fidelia knocked off Hamm 6-1, 6-0 at third singles. 

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Fidelia, Nguyen and Harkess were all making their season debuts, after joining the team in the spring. Nguyen and Harkess both earned singles wins in their overall collegiate debuts. 
  • Fidelia earned his second collegiate win, after going 1-4 in singles play during the 2017-18 season.
  • Moriarty was playing at second singles for the first time in her career, after going 3-7 at third singles during the fall. 
  • The Beacons improved to 3-3 overall at home with the win. 
  • Saturday's contest marked the first-ever meeting between the two programs. 

WHO'S NEXT 

The Beacons will close out their spring season on Sunday, when they travel to take on Regis College at Noon.
