HOW IT HAPPENED

In a game that was played in torrential downpours and halted at one point during a lengthy lightning delay, neither side could muster a shot on goal in their season opener.

The two teams each finished with eight shots on goal, and Roanoke earned a slight 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

Both teams had chances to win throughout the game. Roanoke's Marshall Hodge hit the post in the 38th minute and junior Guilherme Barbosa (Revere, Mass.) caught the crossbar for UMass Boston two minutes into the first overtime.

UMass Boston started a veteran squad on Opening Day. Junior transfer Edson Marques (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and freshman Alden Rosa (Dorchester, Mass.) were the lone newcomers to crack the starting lineup.

Roanoke came out firing in the opening 25 minutes, as they recorded five of their eight shots before the end of the first-half hour.

After managing just one shot in the first half, UMass Boston outshot the Maroons 5-2 in the second half and held a 2-0 edge in overtime.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • UMass Boston sophomore goalie Omar Castro-Dreher (Woonsocket, R.I.) posted his ninth-career shutout in the tie. He has now recorded a shutout in over half of his career starts.

  • Daniel Morales (San Diego, Calif.) and Barbosa tied for the team lead with two shots apiece.
  • The contest marked the first-ever meeting between UMass Boston and Roanoke College.
