Women's Basketball Blows Past Southern Maine 61-43

GORHAM, Maine—UMass Boston women's basketball held host University of Southern Maine to 24 percent shooting and forced 29 turnovers, to earn a 61-43 Little East Conference win Tuesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beacons ran out to a 37-14 halftime lead and never looked back en route to their third-straight win in Gorham. With the win, UMass Boston improved to 3-68 all-time against the Huskies.

Junior Raven Kelsey (Boston, Mass.) and Maritza Scott (Revere, Mass.) paced the Beacons with 10 points apiece. Kelsey added eight rebounds and two steals, while Scott finished 5-for-8 with four rebounds.

Katie Mathieu (Coventry, Conn.) chipped in with nine points off the bench, while Chantel Jordan (Brockton, Mass.) added recorded eight points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Senior point guard Taje Burston (Springfield, Mass.) filled up the statsheet with three points, a game-high six assists, three rebounds and three assists.

Miranda Nicely and Mychaela Harton each scored a team-high eight points for the Huskies, who dropped their ninth-straight game.

UMass Boston took control of the game in the first quarter with a 10-0 run. With the scored tied at 4-4 three minutes in, UMass Boston hit five layups over the next five minutes to grab a 14-4 edge with 1:25 left in the quarter.

The Beacons put the game away for good with a 10-2 flurry in the second quarter to stretch the advantage to 17 (27-10). UMass Boston once again used their big advantage down low, as eight of their 10 points came in the paint.

By the end of the first 20 minutes, the Beacons had stretched their lead out to 37-14.

Kristina Baugh's squad used one final 8-0 run, this time to start the second half, to snuff out any comeback efforts.

BY THE NUMBERS 

  • UMass Boston held the University of Southern Maine to a 4-of-26 showing (15.4 percent) from the field in the first half. The Huskies also went 0-for-9 from deep and turned the ball over 14 times.
  • For the game, UMass Boston shot 46.7 percent (28-of-60) from the field and 3-of-15 (20 percent) from beyond the arc. UMass Boston attempted a season-low three free throw attempts (2-of-3).
  • The Beacons played all 12 available players, with nine of the 12 recording at least one basket.

WHO'S NEXT 

UMass Boston will look to go above .500 in conference for the first time this year, when they host Western Connecticut State University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
