Eastern Connecticut Downs Women's Basketball

BOSTON, Mass. – Led by Jordyn Nappi's game-high 27 points Eastern Connecticut State University defeated women's basketball by the final of 90-67 Saturday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center Gymnasium in a Little East Conference contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After a very close first two quarters of play, Eastern Connecticut State started to build some momentum in the third quarter as they outscored the Beacons 23-15.  The Warriors would keep-up the pressure in the fourth as they extended their lead on their way to the conference victory.

On the day, Nappi finished 9-for-13 from the field, which included three 3-pointers, and a 6-for-9 showing at the charity stripe.  The duo of Kelsey Santagata and Lexis Foster also played a huge role in Saturday's win as the duo combined for 18 rebounds respectively, with Santagata finishing with 18 points, while Foster dropped in 14. 

For the Beacons, they were led by Grace Geary (Falmouth, Mass.), who came-off the bench again to finish with a team-best 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting.  Katie Mathieu (Coventry, Conn.) played one of her best games of the season to finish second on the team with 15 points, while also matching the team high for rebounds with six.

As a team the Beacons, who have struggled offensively recently shot just 31% (22-71) from the field, while the Warriors finished shooting 49.2% overall (29-59). 

The Beacons bench did their best to keep things close in Saturday's conference game, as they combined for 41 of the team's 67 points overall.  The Warriors did the game in rebounds 47-36.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Saturday's contest marked the 72nd meeting between UMass Boston and Eastern Connecticut State
  • Maritza Scott (Revere, Mass.) also had a strong game for the Beacons finishing with nine points and six rebounds
  • Saturday's contest was a rematch of the 2016 and 2015 Little East Conference Tournament championship, both of which were won by the Warriors

The Beacons will travel to the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. conference game.
