HOW IT HAPPENED
Senior Kelsey Shea (West Bridgewater, Mass.) and junior Meghan Erickson (Hubbardston, Mass.) earned the lone wins in singles for the Beacons, who finished their opening weekend 1-1.
Shea rallied from several huge deficits to improve to 2-0 on the season at number six singles. The senior won the first set 6-1, before dropping the second set 6-3. Her opponent raced out to a huge 7-1 lead in the third set super tiebreaker, before Shea cut the deficit to 9-5. Needing to win at least four-straight points to stay alive in the match, Shea struck for six-straight points and a 6-1, 3-6, 11-9 overall victory.
Erickson added the other victory in the match, as she cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 at number five singles.
Farmingdale State earned a 3-0 lead early on after sweeping the doubles. The Rams picked up wins of 8-4 and 8-5 at number one and two doubles, before holding on for a 9-8 (7-5) win at third doubles.
After earning big wins at first and second singles to clinch the match victory, the Rams struggled to put the Beacons away at the final four singles spots.
Vicky Woytowicz (Springfield, Mass.) put up a big fight at fourth singles, before falling 6-4, 6-3. At third singles, freshman Katie Gauthier (West Boylston, Mass.) went to a super tiebreaker, before falling 3-6, 6-3, 10-5.
