NEW LONDON, N.H.—In their final match of the 2014-15 season, UMass Boston women's tennis (3-14) couldn't keep up with host Colby-Sawyer College (10-10) in a 9-0 loss Sunday afternoon.
The 2014 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) East Division Champions swept doubles play and took all 12 sets in doubles action, to snap a four-match losing streak.
Junior Nurcin Celebi (Istanbul, Turkey) played the closest singles match for UMass Boston, as the junior ended her year with a 7-5, 6-4 loss at fifth-flight singles.
All three doubles matches proved to be competitive, as the Chargers won first singles (8-3), second singles (8-4) and third singles (8-5).
The Chargers made it 4-0 at third-flight singles, as Sam White defeated Logan Smith (Southwick, Mass.) 6-2, 6-0.
Colby-Sawyer clinched the victory at number one singles, with junior co-captain Ashlyn Ramsay defeating Kristy Garcia (Miami, Fla.) 6-0, 6-2.
Christine Hill made it 6-0 moments later; as she took a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kelsey Shea (Bridgewater, Mass.) at fourth-flight singles.
The hosts added to their advantage with another 6-1, 6-1 decision, as Ellen Graham knocked off Kathleen Conroy (Quincy, Mass.) on the sixth court.
Martina Daelli (Florence, Italy) put up a good battle at number two singles, before eventually falling 6-0, 6-4 to Ashley Woodside.
In the final and longest match of the afternoon, Celebi went the distance with Lauren Blanchard, before eventually dropping a two-set match. The junior trailed 5-1 in the second set and saved six match points, before winning the next three games, only to fall 6-4 in the second set.
The Beacons will return seven of their eight players for the 2015-16 season, with senior Stephanie McKenna (Amherst, N.H.) being the only player scheduled to graduate this May.
