BOSTON, Mass.—In the first annual Beacons Women's Tennis Invitational, Regis College used a 3-1 mark in doubles play, to earn the crown of Beacons Invitational Champions in Sunday's four-team tournament.
The Pride narrowly held off Wentworth Institute of Technology by a 6 to 4.5 score, as the Leopard's Caitlin Corcoran went a perfect 3-0 to earn the singles title.
UMass Boston ended the day in third with 3.5 points, while Clark University finished in fourth with 2 points.
Each team earned one point for a victory in the main draw, and .5 points for wins in the consolation bracket.
All six UMass Boston athletes who competed earned a victory, in their first competition since returning from Puerto Rico.
Freshman Martina Daelli (Florence, Italy) got the Beacons going with a 2-6, 6-0, 10-2 victory in the quarterfinals of the singles competition against Regis' Erica Murphy. Daelli would prove competitive in the semifinal round, but fell just short against singles runner-up Isabelle Long of Clark, with a 6-3, 7-5 loss.
Junior Nurcin Celebi (Istanbul, Turkey) was the other Beacon to compete in singles action and the lone UMass Boston player to play in three matches. After dropping her opening match 6-3, 6-1 to Regis' Jessie Lord, Celebi earned a spot in the Consolation Championship with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Clark's Misa Mai.
In the finals of the consolation bracket, Daelli fell 6-3, 6-0 to Murphy, the player Daelli had faced in the opening round.
UMass Boston fared slightly better in doubles action, as both teams advanced to the semifinals, before falling to a pair from Regis.
Sophomores Kathleen Conroy (Quincy, Mass.) and Vicky Woytowicz (Springfield, Mass.) earned an 8-5 win over Wentworth's Laura Boyd and Nicole Mooney. Co-captains Kelsey Shea (West Bridgewater, Mass.) and Logan Smith (Southwick, Mass.) followed with a dominant 8-1 win over Clark's Emma Coppes and Tron Nguyen.
In the semifinals though, Conroy and Woytowicz dropped an 8-0 decision to the eventual champions-Emily Morgenbesser and Emily Rice of Regis College. While Regis' Amy DiPace and Jewel Medeiros defeated Shea and Smith 8-3 in the semifinal round.
The Beacons will wrap up their season this Sunday, as they travel to take on North Eastern Athletic Conference East Division Champion Colby-Sawyer College at 3pm.
