SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico--For the second-straight day, UMass Boston men's and women's tennis took on a host team from Puerto Rico and didn't get the friendliest of receptions.
Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras defeated UMass Boston's men's team (1-4) 8-1 and the women's team (3-11) 9-0 in San Juan.
The doubles pair of Charles Lai (Boston, Mass.) and Austin DeLasse (Shrewsbury, Mass.) scored the lone win of the day for UMass Boston, with an epic 9-8 (9-7) victory at first-flight doubles.
Lai and Wyatt Towle (Woburn, Mass.) proved to be the two most stubborn outs for the hosts in singles play, as both players took their opponents deep into at least one set.
On the women's side, Martina Daelli (Florence, Italy) and Kristy Garcia (Miami, Fla.) each played highly competitive singles matches, while co-captains Kelsey Shea (West Bridgewater, Mass.) and Logan Smith (Southwick, Mass.) played a very strong match at number two doubles, before eventually falling.
Men's Tennis: Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras 8, UMass Boston 1
Puerto-Rico Piedras won all six singles matches to earn the match win before doubles was even played, in the second match of four for men's tennis in Florida.
Lai and DeLasse won the Beacons' only point of the day at number one doubles. After having two match points, they found themselves facing two match points later in the contest, before winning the match 9-8, thanks to a 9-7 tiebreak victory.
Singles play went totally in favor of the hosts, as four out of the six Beacons players failed to win more than three games in the two set matches.
Diego Orro was challenged heavily by Lai at number one singles, but the Orro held on for a 7-6 (6-4), 6-4 victory. At number five singles, Towle played one of his best matches as a Beacon thus far, before falling 6-1, 7-5 to Anibal Gonzalez.
Women's Tennis: Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras 9, UMass Boston 0
The women's match followed the typical script of doubles first and singles second, but the Beacons couldn't find any holes in the hosts armor.
Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras dropped just two combined games at number one and three doubles, while Shea and Smith proved a tougher task at number two doubles, with an 8-4 loss.
In singles play, the bottom four of the Beacons' lineup struggled against the hosts, while Garcia and Daelli proved to be slightly tougher tests.
At number one singles, Garcia took the first set 6-3 over Karla Barbosa, only to drop the second set 6-2. In the third-set tiebreaker, Barbosa held off Garcia with a 10-7 win.
Daelli nearly forced a third-set tiebreaker of her own at second-flight singles, as the freshman fell 6-3, 7-5 to Stephanie Stoddard.
