Baseball Earns First Split of Spring Trip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – After facing three nationally-ranked teams in the first 12 hours of their spring trip, baseball (1-3) finally got on the winning track as they earned an 11-7 decision over Muskingum University (3-7) to earn a day two split at the 2015 Snowbird Classic.

In the opener, the Beacons squared-off against the most successful program in NCAA Division III baseball history in the Pioneers of Marietta College (5-3).  With six national titles to their name, the 16th ranked Pioneers handed the Beacons a 9-2 loss in another tough test for the Beacons.

Game two of the doubleheader, saw another impressive offensive showing by UMass, as they jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.  They would combine for nine runs over a three-inning span, which would carry UMass to their first victory over the 2015 campaign.

GAME ONE – UMass Boston 2, Marietta College 9

Against Marietta College, sophomore Daniel Mantoni (Northbridge, Mass.) continued his hot start crushing the Beacons first home run of the year.  Charles LaPaglia (Marshfield, Mass.) would drive in the second run of the game for the Beacons on a sacrifice fly, also his first.

Junior transfer Steve Consiglio (Southbury, Conn.), made his first collegiate start on Saturday, and went 4.1 innings and allowed eight runs, five earned, on six hits.  Marietta's Austin Eaton improved to 2-0 on the year, after going 8.2 innings, in which he allowed the two runs, both earned, on eight hits.

GAME TWO – UMass Boston 11, Muskingum University 7

In the nightcap, UMass Boston's bats continued to make contact as they jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.  They would then tack on three runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to make it an 11-5 ball game.  Muskingum, would manage one more run in the sixth and one in the ninth, but would fall short thanks to closer Tyler Barre (Lake Worth, Fla.).

Luke Nagle (Pembroke, Mass.), went the first four innings in Saturday's contest, but the win went to Daniel Bonito (Swampscott, Mass.), his first, after going two complete innings.  Bonito surrendered three hits, while Nagle gave-up four in the first appearance on the hill for both pitchers.  Alex Carusotto (Pittsfield, Mass.), also stepped on the mound for the first time this season, and allowed just one hit in two innings.

At the plate, Sal Frosceno (Derby, Conn.) had his best day going 2-for-5 with three runs scored.  Mantoni posted a career-high four RBI, as the sophomore finished 2-for-5 with a run scored as well.  LaPaglia and Trevor Bouvier (Salem, N.H.) each ripped doubles in the victory, with Bouvier finishing 2-for-4 at the dish, with two runs scored.

The Beacons return to action tomorrow when they take on SUNY New Paltz at 3:30 p.m. at North Charlotte Regional Park Field #6.
