Miller's Hat Trick, Helps #6 Men's Hockey Rout Wentworth Institute 10-1

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass.—Senior Mike Miller (Wrentham, Mass.) recorded his first collegiate hat trick and a career-high five points, as #6/6 UMass Boston men's hockey rolled past Wentworth Institute of Technology 10-1 in their final game before winter break.

THE BASICS

#6/6 UMass Boston 10, Wentworth 1

(UMass Boston 9-1-1)

(Wentworth 3-9-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

After Wentworth tied the score at 1-1 3:45 into the first period, UMass Boston scored the final nine goals of the contest, including six in the first and four more in the third.

Seven different Beacons found the back of the net, led by Miller and fellow senior Derek Colucci (North Scituate, R.I.). Miller scored twice in the first and assisted on the first two goals of the third period, before adding the final goal of the game for the Beacons' first hat trick of the season. Miller more than doubled his season-point total, as he came into the contest with two goals and two assists in eight games.

Colucci nearly matched Miller, as he finished with two goals and an assist to help UMass Boston earn their fifth-straight win over Wentworth.

Connor McStravick (Philadelphia, Pa.), Matt Lemire (Townsend, Mass.), Zach Lindsay (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.), Tyler Bishop (Ramsey, N.J.) and Alex Demchuk (Calgary, Alberta) also scored in the win.

Freshman Garrison Sanipass (Northbrook, Ill.) paced the Beacons with three assists, while freshman Mike Thomson (Reading, Mass.) posted the first two points of his career-with two assists.

In net, Billy Faust (Alta Loma, Calif.) stopped 24 of 25 shots to improve to 7-1-1 on the season.

Wentworth's Kyle Lebrun scored the Leopards' lone goal, while Byron Carlisle and Eric Grover picked up assists on the play. Freshman Matt Jenkins took the loss after allowing four goals on nine shots in the opening 8:32. Senior Ryan Hubbard stopped 33 of 38 shots in 41:08 of action, while Ryan Hubbard made five saves on six shots in the final 10:20.

UMass Boston picked the Leopards apart in the first period, as it took McStravick just 2:37 to find the back of the net. After the Leopards answered just over a minute later, UMass Boston scored three goals in quick succession to chase Jenkins.

The Beacons added two goals in the final 2:04 of the period to push their lead to 6-1.

Neither side could find the back of the net in an extremely physical second period. Both teams ramped up the physicality, as there were several huge hits and nine penalty minutes doled out.

UMass Boston broke the flood gates back open at 6:06 of the third, as they scored four goals within eight minutes. Colucci opened the scoring at 6:26 and was quickly followed by Demchuk, another Colucci goal and Miller's final goal at 14:24.
