Women's Basketball Locks Down Fitchburg State 65-31

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass.--UMass Boston set new season-bests for opponent's field goal percentage (24.1 percent) and three-point field goal percentage (10 percent), en-route to a 65-31 rout of Fitchburg State women's basketball Tuesday night at the Clark Athletic Center Gymnasium.

THE BASICS

UMass Boston 65, Fitchburg State 31

(UMass Boston 4-0, Little East Conference 0-0)

(Fitchburg State 0-6, MASCAC 0-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Despite a sluggish shooting day of their own, the Beacons cruised to their fourth-straight win to the start the season, in large part thanks to a 23-4 fourth quarter.

Offensively, the Beacons were paced by senior Olivia Murphy (Canton, Mass.) and junior Katrina Edwards (Springfield, Mass.). Murphy finished with 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting and 18 rebounds, 13 of which came on the offensive end. Edwards recorded the second double-double of her collegiate career with 12 points (5-of-8 shooting) and tied her career-high with 14 rebounds.

It was a total team effort though, as all 14 players available for UMass Boston saw minutes and 10 players scored. Junior Esther Joseph (Somerville, Mass.) scored the first five points of her collegiate career, while sophomore Elaina Wright-McCarthy (Boston, Mass.) and freshman Kyana Prince (Waltham, Mass.) each scored in their collegiate debuts.

Stephanie Leveillee and Melissa Guglielmello paced the short-handed Falcons with eight points apiece. Leveillee added a team-high seven rebounds and three blocks for Fitchburg State, who were missing four players, including leading scorer Erika Schneider.

After going down 2-0, UMass Boston scored the next 11 points and never looked back. The Beacons raced out to a 17-4 lead at the end of the first and pushed the lead out to 16 (30-14) at the break.

Despite making little headway into cutting into the Beacons' lead, Fitchburg State actually outscored the Beacons' 13-12 in the third quarter to cut their deficit to 42-27.

UMass Boston finally put the game away in the fourth quarter though, as the Beacons held Fitchburg State without a point over the final 4:55 to end the game on a 12-0 run.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • UMass Boston is 4-0 for just the fourth time in program history. The Beacons 4-0 starts matches the 2001-02 and 2012-13 teams and is one shy of the 1994-95 team that opened the year 5-0.
  • Junior Mariah Vasquez (Somerville, Mass.) and freshman Cris Martinez (Boston, Mass.) also made their collegiate debuts in the victory.
  • Reigning Little East Conference Rookie of the Year Grace Geary (Falmouth, Mass.) made her season debut in the win. Geary finished with six points, three rebounds, two steals, two assists and two blocks.
  • The Beacons held a 60-33 advantage on the boards and a 36-14 advantage in points in the paint.

WHO'S NEXT
