BOSTON, Mass.—Johnson & Wales University (2-0) used a sweep in doubles to roll to a 8-1 victory over UMass Boston women's tennis (0-2) Wednesday afternoon at the B.C. High Tennis Courts.
Freshman Kristy Garcia (Miami, Fla.) earned her first collegiate victory in the loss, as she earned a marathon win over Johnson & Wales' Morgan Thompson at number two singles. After taking the first set from her opponent 6-2, Garcia dropped the second set 6-4. With the match already decided, the two players played a super tiebreak, with Garcia earning a 10-6 victory, and a two set to one victory overall.
That would be the sole win for the Beacons, as Johnson & Wales improved to 6-0 all-time against UMass Boston and earned their second-straight 8-1 win over UMass Boston.
Stephanie Piperis and and Taylor Klein opened the match with an 8-1 victory over Kathleen Conroy (Quincy, Mass.) and Vicky Woytowicz (Springfield, Mass.) at number three singles.
UMass Boston captains Kelsey Shea (West Bridgewater, Mass.) and Logan Smith (Southwick, Mass.) nearly earned the Beacons' first doubles win of the year, before falling 8-5 to the Wildcats' second doubles pair of Emily Glass and Gabrielle Longo.
At number one doubles, Samantha Jo Borr and Thompson knocked off Martina Daelli (Florcene, Italy) and Garcia by an 8-4 score.
Borr extended the Wildcats lead to 4-0, when she defeated Daelli 6-0, 6-0 at number one singles.
Johnson & Wales clinched the victory at sixth singles, when Klein knocked off Vanessa Pojidaev (West Bloomfield, Mich.) 6-0, 6-1.
Glass added a point at number four singles, as she beat Shea by a 6-0, 6-1 score.
Piperis made it 7-0 in favor of the visitors with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Smith.
Garcia earned the first point of the year for UMass Boston thus far, as she came back from a difficult second set, to hand Thompson her first loss of the season.
In the final match of the early evening, Longo defeated Conroy 6-3, 6-3 just before the sun completely set.
The Beacons will open Little East Conference play Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Worcester State University. Saturday's match is a Lancers home match, but will be played at Clark University in Worcester.
