BOSTON, Mass. – Still in the hunt for their first Little East Conference win of the 2014 season, the Beacons looked to take down the Vikings of Salem State University Tuesday afternoon at the Boston College High School Tennis Courts. However the Vikings would take an early 3-0 lead in doubles play and never look back as they earned a 7-2 win.
Tuesday's victory dropped the Beacons record to 1-7, 0-5 in the Little East. For the Vikings they pushed their overall record above .500 as they now stand at 4-3. In conference play they sit fourth in the conference with their 3-1 record.
In doubles play the Beacons second and third flight fell behind early, but were able to battle back and force a close back-and-forth contest. All three doubles matches were extremely close with the Vikings earning an 8-6 win at first and third flight, and a 9-8 (7-4) win at the second flight.
Martina Daelli (Florence, Italy) managed to overcome an early 1-0 deficit to win back-to-back sets by the finals of 6-1, 6-1 to give the Beacons their first point of the day. Also picking-up a huge win on Tuesday was Nurcin Celebi (Istanbul, Turkey). The junior overcame a 5-0 deficit and battled her way to a 7-5, 6-3 victory.
The win for Daelli marked her third of the season, and second in conference play at second singles. For Celebi, she improved to 4-2 overall with Tuesday's win, and now has a conference record of 3-2 in 2014.
Also putting together a strong performance, was Kathleen Conroy (Quincy, Mass.) who trailed early in set one and nearly came back to win in the opening frame. Unfortunately, Salem State's Hillary Gustafson earned the 7-6, 6-0 decision.
The Beacons return to action tomorrow when they travel to Western Connecticut State University for a 3:30 p.m. conference match. The match is a make-up from last week when the two teams were rained out.
